SIBS is an award-winning public-private partnership aimed at revolutionizing USDA sugarcane breeding efforts. Established in 2022 as an offshoot of the Breeding Insight OnRamp project, this partnership seeks to advance predictive breeding of sugarcane cultivars with enhanced yield stability.
The SIBS project has initiated three working groups composed of experts from USDA, private industry and academia. These groups meet monthly to provide guidance and coordination for shared phenomics, genomics, and operations research projects. The groups have made strides towards deploying handheld and plant-wearable sensors, sequencing and assembling key cultivars, developing decision support applications and enhancing data management and accessibility of breeding data.
