Matthew Willman's current research focuses on physical and functional characterization of the wheat pangenome and marker development for US soft red winter wheat (SRWW) germplasm. His research goals include (1) accurate modeling of an SRWW pangenome and (2) utilization of this pangenome to understand and improve selection for agronomic traits including disease resistance, adaptation, and grain yield.

Before pursuing a PhD at NC State, Matthew completed an MS at The Ohio State University focused on marker-trait association and genotype-by-environment analysis of fruit quality traits in black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) breeding germplasm. In addition, he has four years' experience working as a research assistant focused on molecular and quantitative approaches to understanding plant-microbe interactions.
